MapleWood West Ride Cancelled 5/29/2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the cancelation of this year's Maplewood West endurance race.
The ride is held in Maplewood State Park, arguably one of the most beautiful parks in the state, in Pelican Rapids, MN. Pelican Rapids has seen 4+ inches of rain in the last week and a half, resulting in water table levels the park hasn't seen in 10+ years. There is standing water on nearly every trail, causing previously firm trails through prairies to turn to swamps.
In order to protect the delicate prairie landscape through which our trails run, the park management has advised cancellation, and we respect their wishes. While we as endurance riders will ride in just about any weather, on just about any trail, the park's concern is for the 4+ months of trail riding yet to come in the park this summer. If we have 70+ horses going through pastern-high mud, the trails will take months to recover. Riders would be tempted to leave the trail in muddy sections, riding through delicate prairie and leaving "cow trails" behind, encouraging others to follow.
We understand the financial, social and competitive implications this decision has, and are working to refund camping and pre-registrations. Please be patient with us, and wait for further communication via email.
Sincerely, Sarah & Diane
